Miss Maine Areas of Competition
The following is a description of each area of competition to be judged and the percentage of the contestant’s total score for each area.

  • Personal Interview (25%) - During this phase of the competition a panel of judges will interview each contestant for 10 minutes. Scoring will be based on the first impression, communication skills, personality, validated opinions and responses, confidence, sense of accomplishment and knowledge and understanding of her platform issue. This part of the competition gives the judges a chance to meet each contestant as an individual and gives the contestant a chance to reveal her true self.
  • On-stage Question (5%) - This phase of the competition serves as a final chance for contestants to impress the judges.  Scoring will reflect the ability of the contestant to communicate and speak effectively. The on-stage question also helps the judges to evaluate the contestants poise under pressure.
  • Talent (35%) - All contestants will be judged on a maximum 90-second performance of their choice. Different talent presentations, such as playing an instrument, dancing, singing, reciting a poem, presenting a dramatic monologue, gymnastics etc, may be performed. Contestants will be scored on entertainment value, technical skill and stage presence.
  • Evening Wear (20%) - Contestants are required to wear a full length gown which is in good taste. They will be judged on walk and carriage, poise and grace, beauty, sense of confidence, and sense of style.  Does she take command of the stage by simply walking on it?
  • Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit (15%) - Judges in this part of the competition will look to see how well the contestant maintains a lifestyle of good physical health, whether she meets the public expectation of a titleholder, and whether or not she has the confidence needed to be a titleholder. The contestant’s drive, energy, confidence, physical appearance, presence, and charisma are to be likewise considered.

Miss Maine's Outstanding Teen Areas of Competition

The following is description of the areas of competition to be judged and the percentage of the contestant’s total score for each area:

  • Interview (25%) - During this phase of the competition a panel of judges will interview each contestant for 8 minutes. The judges will ask her questions related to her interests, hobbies, educational goals and achievements, volunteer service and community activities, etc. Scoring will be based on the content of the interview and overall communication skills, personality, intelligence and poise. This part of the competition gives the judges a chance to meet each contestant as an individual and gives the contestant a chance to reveal her true self.
  • Talent (35%) - All contestants will be judged on a maximum 90-second performance of their choice. Different talent presentations, such as playing an instrument, dancing, singing, reciting a poem, presenting a dramatic monologue, gymnastics etc., may be performed. Contestants will be scored on stage presence as well as technical skill
  • Evening Wear and On-stage Question (20%) - Contestants are required to wear a full-length gown which is in good taste and age appropriate. They will be judged on overall impression, walk, poise, posture and sense of confidence on stage.  For the on-stage question portion, each contestant will be asked a question.  Scoring will reflect the ability of the contestant to communicate and speak effectively.  The on-stage question also helps the judges to evaluate the contestant's poise under pressure.
  • Scholastic Achievement (10%) - This phase of judging will be based on how well the contestant is doing in school. A separate panel of judges will score this prior to the competition.
  • Lifestyle and Fitness (10%) - Judges in this part of the competition will look to see how well the contestant maintains a lifestyle of good physical health, whether she meets the public expectation of a titleholder, and whether or not she has the confidence needed to be a titleholder. The contestant’s drive, energy, confidence, physical appearance, presence, and charisma are to be likewise considered.
